North Kohala Coast Real Estate

North Kohala Coast Community Overview

Kohala Mountain’s prominence on the northwest tip of the Big Island gave the Kohala region its name. Kohala is one of the most historically significant areas in Hawaii. Mo’okini Heiau, the birthplace of King Kamehameha I and one of Hawaii’s most sacred sites, lies on the North Kohala Coast and is a prominent site in the region. The temple was built in 480 A.D. and served as Kamehameha’s war temple. In ancient Hawaii, this region was ruled by a supreme ruler, Ali’i Nui, who ruled from this temple before the kingdom united.

Today, Kohala is divided into North and South regions. South Kohala is home to the dry western shore with famous resorts, beaches, and golf courses. One will notice a big environmental change when traveling north along the Kohala Coast. You will see North Kohala’s residential communities and vast farmland. Beyond that are the lush, undeveloped pastoral lands of North Kohala.

Pololu Valley cuts through Kohala Mountain and is the northernmost in a series of erosional valleys that form the mountain’s east coast. The ocean side of Pololu Valley is home to the world-famous black sand beach, and just around the bend is the charming town of Hawi. This quaint town is best known for the annual Iron Man Triathlon held every October. Once home to a bustling sugar industry, Hawi is now content to be the home of quaint art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.
