Kailua Kona
Kailua-Kona, within the Kona District, offers nearly 60 miles of coastline along the pristine west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Covering the shoreline to the upper slopes of Hualalai Mountain, this unique area is where Hawaiian Royalty, or Ali’i, spent their summers and where Captain James Cook spent his final days. Kailua means “two seas” or “two currents” and Kona means “leeward side” thus Kailua-Kona is named for its two main bays running along the coastline.
